Yellowknife
Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, was an exciting contrast to the vast stretches of wilderness we had traveled through to reach it. With a population of only about 22,000, it felt surprisingly cosmopolitan and wonderfully diverse. Even a trip to the grocery store reflected that diversity, with foods from cultures around the world.
Set along the shore of Great Slave Lake, Yellowknife is a city built into an extraordinary northern landscape. Ancient exposed rock seems to be everywhere—under buildings, beside roads, and along the water—giving the city a character unlike anywhere else I had been.
I loved the combination: a lively, multicultural community surrounded by water, rock, and the immense landscape of the North. After traveling through so many remote places to get there, Yellowknife felt both unexpected and exciting—and there was always something that made me stop, look, and draw.
