Studio painting gives me something plein air painting doesn’t: time. Without the light changing or the weather moving in, I can stay with an idea longer, make changes, scrape things away, build them back up, and let the painting find its own direction.
Some of these paintings begin with places I have experienced, photographs I’ve taken, or memories that have stayed with me. Others develop through the process of painting itself. The landscape may still be the starting point, but in the studio I have the freedom to move beyond what was literally there.
These paintings are less about recording a particular moment and more about what remains after I’ve left the place.
