I painted this piece plein air in Blackstone Territorial Park in the Northwest Territories. There was no one else there—just the sound of wind moving across the water and the immense quiet of the landscape stretching in every direction.What drew me most was the stillness. The water held the sky almost perfectly, while the distant mountains shifted constantly with changing light and weather. Even though the scene felt vast, there was also an intimacy to being alone in that place, standing quietly and trying to keep pace with what was unfolding in front of me.I worked quickly, focusing less on detail and more on atmosphere, temperature, and the rhythm of the land. The cool blues and grays, the movement in the clouds, and the dark foreground vegetation all became part of the experience of standing there. For me, this painting is about solitude, scale, and the feeling of being completely immersed in a northern landscape untouched by noise or distraction.
