I painted this piece from memory and sensation more than from direct observation. I wanted it to feel like a landscape caught between erosion and light — a place that is both harsh and luminous. The forms suggest canyon walls or desert cliffs, but they also dissolve into surface, gesture, and atmosphere.As I worked, I became interested in the tension between structure and collapse. I scraped, layered, and removed paint repeatedly, allowing earlier marks to remain visible like traces of weather, time, or human passage. The warm ochres, mineral browns, and flashes of pale yellow emerged slowly, almost as if the painting was uncovering itself.For me, this work is less about depicting a specific location and more about the emotional memory of the Southwest — the heat reflecting off stone, the silence of open land, and the feeling that the landscape holds stories far older than ourselves.Purchase a print.
