Pink Moment – Ojai

During the winter months, Ojai’s famous “Pink Moment” can be spectacular—and completely unpredictable. I would head out with my plein air gear, set up and wait for the mountains to turn pink, only to have nothing happen. Eventually, I stopped trying to catch it with my easel.

This early palette knife painting was created in the studio from a photograph I had taken when the Pink Moment actually appeared. I was interested less in describing every detail than in capturing that brief, intense wash of pink across the mountains and the deep silhouettes of the trees below.
