Observation 1: The Sierras

For the past year, alongside my Morning Practice, I’ve been filling a sketchbook with a different kind of drawing.

These drawings aren’t studies for paintings. They’re explorations of observation through line, value, and rhythm. They allow me to simplify what I see and discover relationships that become the foundation for larger work.

Observation 1: The Sierras is the first painting to emerge from that process. It isn’t a copy of a drawing. It’s the result of observation being absorbed, remembered, and reinterpreted.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter in my practice—one where drawing and painting are connected through sustained observation.
