Icefields Parkway – Saskatchewan River Crossing

This painting was inspired by the vast landscape along the Icefields Parkway in the Canadian Rockies — a place that continues to stay with me long after I leave. The broad valley, reflective water, and distant mountain ranges carried a sense of scale and quiet that felt almost overwhelming in person.

Painted in oil on cradled board, I worked to capture the shifting atmosphere and changing light moving across the land. The darker foreground trees anchor the composition while softer passages of sky, water, and mountain forms create a feeling of distance and openness.

The Icefields Parkway has a rhythm unlike anywhere else I’ve traveled — weather moving quickly through the mountains, glacial water reflecting the sky, and long stretches of solitude between destinations. This painting grew out of that experience of being immersed in the landscape and wanting to hold onto its stillness and immensity.
