El Matador State Beach

Painted plein air at El Matador State Beach along the Southern California coast. I was drawn to the massive sea stack rising from the water and the way its warm, earthy colors contrasted with the cool grays and blues of the ocean and sky. Working on location, the constantly moving water became less about individual waves and more about capturing the shapes, movement, and atmosphere of the scene.
