I went back to Kluane Lake this morning to work out a possible painting. I’m not sure yet—this scene is tricky.
You can’t tell from this drawing, of course, but there are some wonderful colors here. And like a lot of painters, color gets me so excited that sometimes values can fly right out the window.
That’s one of the reasons these studies have become so important to me. They make me stop, look at the shapes, and figure out what is actually happening before I start chasing color.
Sometimes I need the drawing to say, “Whoa, Chris. Slow down.”
