This morning I was so excited to draw this scene that I forgot to leave my usual line for the location—and even forgot my value boxes. Luckily, the bottom of the scene was light, so I improvised.
This is along the Alcan Highway in the Yukon, on our way to Alaska. I still remember how different everything looked. Tiny black spruce struggling through the permafrost. Willow growing everywhere—I had no idea there were so many different varieties. And water. Water seemed to sit everywhere.
We had just left a campsite where we’d stayed for a couple of days and where the bugs were definitely the rulers of the land.
One of the things I love about my Morning Practice is how drawing takes me back—not just to what a place looked like, but to all the little things I noticed while I was there.
