La Cañada Larga Road is a place I return to again and again. The broad openness of the land, the low grasses, and the distant hills create a kind of quiet that feels increasingly rare in Ventura County.This drawing looks across standing water toward the rolling hills beyond, where traces of ranching and agriculture still shape the landscape. I was interested in the contrast between the reflective surface of the water and the solid, simplified forms of the hills rising behind it.Using layered grayscale markers and ink, I tried to keep the drawing spare and open — allowing the atmosphere of the place to carry as much weight as the details themselves.
