2026.03.09 Lichen & Fungi – Yellowknife

This was the first drawing I made of the lichen and fungi at Fred Henne Territorial Park. The textures were so intricate—small worlds layered across stone and wood, each shape feeling both delicate and ancient.What fascinated me was how much life existed in something so easily overlooked. The patterns of lichen, the small clustered forms, and the contrast between softness and rugged Canadian Shield rock made me stop and look much longer than I expected. I ended up doing another drawing because I didn’t feel this first one quite captured the wonder of it—but that impulse to look again is part of why I draw.
