Observation 9: La ParroquiaIn San Miguel de Allende, I spent my mornings on the rooftop, drinking coffee and listening to the city moving below me. In the distance, the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel peeked above the roofs. I wanted to distill the relative quiet of that rooftop—a respite from the bustling streets below.

Observation 8: San Miguel de AllendeIn this series of four paintings, I distilled the essence of San Miguel de Allende—the colors, textures, and patina of streets and buildings allowed to age gracefully. I wanted to capture the beauty of those worn surfaces and the traces of time they hold.
I chose the mat and frame as part of each composition, extending the painting’s colors and giving these small works a larger presence.
Painted image dimensions vary slightly among the four works. Each is presented with a mat in a 16 × 16-inch black floater frame.

Observation 4: Bryce Canyon National ParkBryce Canyon has an energy that stays with me. The plants and trees there are strong—they are survivors. I wanted to bring that strength and energy into this painting through layers of cold wax medium and the marks of Pitt pen.

Observation 3: Athabasca GlacierI wanted to convey the persistent cold of Athabasca Glacier. Rather than confining the white to the glacier itself, I let it envelop the whole mountain, with its contours emerging through the textured surface.
I chose the warm rust mat to echo the earth tones in the painting, and the black frame to complete the composition. I’m showing it matted and framed because I consider both part of the artwork.

Observation 2: Atigun PassAtigun Pass crosses Alaska’s Brooks Range, a vast landscape shaped by ice, permafrost, wind, and time. Above the tree line, vegetation stays close to the earth and the scale of the mountains can be overwhelming.
I wasn’t interested in painting exactly what Atigun Pass looked like. I wanted to paint what it felt like—the immense scale, the cold light, the movement through the mountains, and the quiet that makes you aware of just how small you are.
Observation 2: Atigun Pass is the second painting in my Observation Series, a body of work that grows from sustained looking—beginning with drawings and photographs made from observation and continuing in the studio, where the memory and experience of a place become something less literal.

Observation 1: The SierrasFor the past year, alongside my Morning Practice, I’ve been filling a sketchbook with a different kind of drawing.
These drawings aren’t studies for paintings. They’re explorations of observation through line, value, and rhythm. They allow me to simplify what I see and discover relationships that become the foundation for larger work.
Observation 1: The Sierras is the first painting to emerge from that process. It isn’t a copy of a drawing. It’s the result of observation being absorbed, remembered, and reinterpreted.
This marks the beginning of a new chapter in my practice—one where drawing and painting are connected through sustained observation.
