Drawing: The Art of LookingSaturday, November 14, 2026 · 10:00 AM–1:00 PM
414 E. Ojai Ave., Ojai, CA 93023 · Classroom #4Spend a creative morning in Ojai slowing down, looking closely, and discovering a different way to draw what you see. Using a photograph as our starting point, we’ll simplify what we see into large shapes, lines and values before building the drawing with pen and a limited range of grays.
For our first drawing, both the reference photograph and your sketchbook page will be lightly gridded, giving you a simple guide for proportion and placement. I’ll take you through my process step by step—from the first pencil marks to the final layers of ink and value.
For your second drawing, you’ll have more freedom to work independently. Choose from photographs I’ll provide, or bring a photograph of your own—a landscape, cityscape, building, garden or another scene that interests you. Your photograph can be printed or on an iPad. I’ll help you look for the important shapes and values, simplify what you see, and translate it into your drawing.
No drawing experience is necessary, but the workshop is equally suited to artists and painters who want to strengthen their eye for composition, proportion and value.
All materials are included, along with your own The Art of Looking drawing kit and handmade sketchbook to take home.
