Southwest Dreamin’ 2
30 × 30 inches
Oil and cold wax medium on cradled board

The Southwest stays with me less as a single place than as an accumulation of color, weather, and distance. In Southwest Dreamin’, ochre cliffs rise beneath an expansive blue sky, while incised lines and pale botanical forms move across the foreground like traces of grasses, pathways, and memory.

I built the painting through repeated layers of oil and cold wax, scraping into the surface and allowing earlier marks and colors to reappear. Warm earth tones are held against airy blues, creating a tension between the solidity of stone and the openness of the sky.

Rather than depicting a particular view, this painting reflects what remains after leaving the landscape—the dry light, weathered surfaces, and the feeling of space continuing far beyond what can be seen.

Dreamin’ of Chaco Canyon
Dreamin’ of Chaco Canyon
30 x 30
Oil with cold wax on cradled board

When I painted Dreamin’ of Chaco Canyon, I had never actually visited Chaco Canyon. I was fascinated by the history of the ancestral Native American cultures who inhabited this remarkable place, especially the mystery and symbolism of the kivas embedded within the landscape. The painting grew out of that sense of curiosity and imagination — an attempt to connect with a place I knew only through research, photographs, and stories.

Since creating this piece, I’ve had the opportunity to visit Chaco Canyon in person, and it was even more powerful and compelling than I had imagined. The vastness of the landscape, the architectural remains, and the feeling of deep history lingering in the desert made the experience unforgettable. Looking back, this painting feels like both a dream of a place and a quiet invitation that eventually became real.

This is also available as a print through Fine Art America.
