Observation Series

Series • Plein Air • Studio Landscapes • Dreamscapes • Observation • Inspired By

The Observation series grew from my Morning Practice, a daily drawing discipline built around careful observation. Whether working directly from life or revisiting my own photographs from travels and time spent in the landscape, each drawing is an opportunity to study the essential relationships of value, shape, light, and atmosphere.

The paintings continue that process of exploration. Beginning with drawings, photographs, and memories of a place, I develop value studies and simplify the composition to uncover its underlying structure. Rather than describing a landscape, I look for its visual rhythm—what first caught my attention and continues to hold it.

For me, observation is an ongoing process rather than a single moment. The experience of a place begins in the field, continues through drawing and reflection, and evolves in the studio as each painting moves toward a more distilled and abstract expression of the landscape.
