The Northwest Territories was one of the places I most looked forward to experiencing on our journey north—and it didn’t disappoint. The distances are immense, the communities few and far between, and the landscape has a quietness and scale that is difficult to describe until you’re in it.

But this is also a landscape where the effects of a changing climate are difficult to ignore. Wildfires have become more intense and longer lasting, and tundra fires can continue smoldering beneath the surface long after the visible flames are gone. Fire, smoke, and the evidence of past burns became part of what I was seeing as we traveled.

My work from the Northwest Territories includes time spent at Blackstone Territorial Park and throughout the Southern Northwest Territories, where waterfalls, rivers, forests, and long stretches of road became part of the experience. Yellowknife, where I spent more time drawing and observing, has its own collection.

The beauty here is immense, but so is the sense that this is a landscape undergoing change. Drawing it made me look more closely—not only at what was in front of me, but at what may not always remain the same.
