Michigan Drawings

My experience of Michigan is really the Upper Peninsula and Isle Royale—two places I love for their wildness, water, and sense of being a little removed from everything else.
Isle Royale is especially memorable. Its isolated location in Lake Superior means getting there takes some effort, and once you arrive, there simply aren't as many people. There is space and quiet, rocky shoreline, dense forest, and water that seems to be everywhere.
It is the kind of place that makes me want to slow down, look, and draw.
And then there are the bugs. So many bugs. Apparently isolation has its price.
These drawings and paintings come from my time in the Upper Peninsula and on Isle Royale—places I would happily return to, bug spray in hand.
