My experiences in Mexico have centered around two very different places: San Miguel de Allende and Oaxaca, both visited through art.

I returned to San Miguel several times for workshops. Our days were so full that I never seemed to find time to paint plein air, but those workshops became the place where my Dreamin’ series was incubated. Ideas and ways of working that began there continued to evolve long after I returned home. I also loved simply walking the city—the color, architecture, changing light, and especially the life unfolding in its streets.

Oaxaca offered a different kind of art experience. Traveling with an art group, we visited artisans in their villages and studios, seeing firsthand the extraordinary range of traditions, materials, and skills passed through generations. It was deeply inspiring.

And then there was the food. Oaxaca made it very clear that experiencing a place can involve all the senses.
