Grand Canyon National Park is a place where scale can be difficult to comprehend. Standing at the rim, the landscape seems to stretch endlessly—layers of rock, shifting color, deep shadow, and light constantly changing what you see.

It can also feel almost impossibly complex to draw or paint. But when I stop looking at all the detail and begin looking instead at the larger shapes and values, the landscape starts to reveal itself differently. Cliffs become patterns of light and dark; distant formations dissolve into layers; and the overwhelming becomes something I can begin to understand through drawing and painting.

The work here comes from those moments of looking—both while I was at the Grand Canyon and later, as I returned to the landscape through my photographs and memories.
