Eastern Canada Drawings

I have spent a great deal of time in Ontario and Quebec, although, surprisingly, I don’t yet have a large body of work from either. For now, I have brought them together as Eastern Canada—a collection that can grow as I return.

Ontario holds a particularly important place in my life as an artist. For many summers, I canoed in Algonquin Provincial Park, traveling through its lakes, forests, rocky shorelines, and changing weather. It is also the landscape so closely associated with Tom Thomson, one of the artists who has most influenced my own work. I have paddled those waters and spent time among those trees and lakes, and his ability to simplify what he saw while capturing the energy and character of a place continues to influence the way I see landscape.

Those experiences have found their way into my studio work as well. My painting Helpless, inspired by Neil Young’s song of the same name, grew from my memories of time spent there—the landscape, the feeling of the North, and the way a place can remain with you long after you’ve left it.

There may not be many works from Eastern Canada here yet, but there are years of experience and looking behind them.
